Kevin and Julie McAdoo made a smooth transition from Air Force life to Office Pride franchise ownership

In this interview, the McAdoos share why they think military service can be a good training ground for franchise ownership.
Tell us a little about your military experience.
Julie: Kevin retired in April 2013 after 20 years as a pilot. We loved being in the military. We followed orders – sometimes they made sense, and sometimes they didn’t. You sometimes get the fruits of your labor and sometimes you don’t, but with a business, when you put in all that extra effort, then you have a reward that is tangible.
We both had parents in the military, and we both ended up in the Air Force. We met while stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. We were members of the 517th Airlift Squadron, which at the time was a C-130 unit. The C-130H Hercules is a military transport plane produced by Lockheed Martin. He was a pilot; I was a navigator.
How did you find out about Office Pride?
Kevin: We were at a leadership and management and sales course here in Tampa. One of the instructors knew Office Pride CEO Todd Hopkins, and Todd was looking for new franchisees in the Tampa area. The gentleman suggested us to Todd, and then Todd followed up with us. The rest is history.
Do you think your military experience works well with the experience you have with Office Pride?
Kevin: The core values for the military – specifically the Air Force – are integrity first, service before self and excellence in all you do. The core values with Office Pride dovetail with that as far as integrity being very important. Excellence is also extremely important, and so is always doing what is right for the customers, the employees and everybody involved. For us, it was great to be aligned with another organization that had such strong values.
The military and Office Pride are systems-driven organizations. How do they compare?
Kevin: We call it “checklist usage” in the military world. If somebody doesn’t apply checklist usage, then they aren’t doing things the right way. It’s basically a thorough, proven protocol that relates to task completion. Every single flight that we ever took, there were numerous – and very thorough – checklists. They are there so you don’t miss a step. As crazy as things get running a business, it makes sense to use an approach like that when you are doing things like payroll.
What was your transition like from military life to Office Pride franchisee?
Kevin: Everybody on the corporate side, and especially all of your franchisee peers, are just so thankful for your service. Everybody really wants to see you succeed. It can be tough coming into the corporate world, but Office Pride is very welcoming. We never ever felt like we were out on our own. I constantly call other franchisees asking for advice. They’re very open. It can make for a smooth transition.
Would you, and have you, recommended an Office Pride Commercial Cleaning franchise to fellow veterans?
Julie: Oh, yes. We posted on social media that we had just bought a franchise, and all of our veteran friends were very supportive. Everybody thinks it’s the coolest thing. A couple of people sent us a message and said, “Hey, who can I talk to about this?” I just got a text last week from a real good buddy of mine from college who was talking to a friend getting ready to retire from the military who didn’t want to fly for a commercial airline; he wanted to be his own boss. My friend told him, “I know some people you should talk to.”
What do you think it takes to succeed as an Office Pride owner?
Kevin: I would say that it definitely takes dedication. You also need the ability to take on responsibility. When you become a business owner, and if you want your business to succeed, you have to be responsible. You can’t say: “Well, you know what? I don’t feel like going out and checking on this account or filling in for my cleaner who got sick” or whatever the case may be. You have a responsibility to that customer. You always have to keep your goals in mind – why you are doing this.
Is it easy to grow your business?
Kevin: You either need to have some folks in the queue who want more work, or you have to be able to hire quickly – sometimes very quickly.
People who hire us seem to be really motivated. They are ready to make a change. They are ready to adopt a service, and they don’t want to wait a month. They are either done doing it themselves or they are so fed up with the other company that they are ready to fire them immediately. I had one a few weeks ago, a pretty big account for us, and she asked, “Can you start this week?” I think I met with her on Tuesday. She called back and hired us on Wednesday, and she would’ve loved for us to have started that Thursday. Luckily, I had a person I had hired for another account who wasn’t supposed to start for two weeks, so I just went ahead and put her on this account.
Cleaning franchises can have a low barrier to entry, and there’s competition because of that. However, that doesn’t mean all the competition is good. When you are the better company, all you need to do is provide a great service. Office Pride sets you up to do that, with their philosophy, core values and training.
